8. Ban Users Module in Beyond Multisite

This module gives you the option to ban users and their IP address. They will still be able to visit the site, but will not be able to login, comment or signup.

What does the Ban do exactly?

  • The banned user will be logged-out and will be denied login from any IP address.
  • If there are other users with the same IP, they will be logged-out. However, they will be able to login from another IP.
  • No one will be able to login, signup or comment from the banned IP.

How to Ban a User?

  1. Navigate to the Network Admin Users Screen.
  2. Under the chosen user click the Ban link.
  3. A new screen will open, where you will see some information about the user and his last IP address. It is also possible to see a message explaining why you cannot ban this user.
  4. Choose an option for the Ban period drop-down menu. If you choose an option different from Permanent, the user will be automatically (using the WordPress cron feature) unbanned after the selected period of time has passed.
  5. Click the Ban user and IP button.

How to Unban a User?

  1. Navigate to the Network Admin Users Screen.
  2. Under the chosen user click the Unban link.
  3. A new screen will open, where you will see some information about the user and his last IP address. Click the Unban user and IP button.

How to View All Banned Users?

From the Network Admin Screen click on Users and then on Banned Users.

How to Find a Specific Banned User?

  1. From the Network Admin Screen click on Users and then on Banned Users.
  2. If you know at least parts of the user ID, username or IP address of the user, you can enter it in the search text box and click Search Banned Users.
  3. If you only know when the user was banned you can find the user manually by looking through the pages of the table. The users are ordered from the most recently banned to the oldest. You can go to the next page from the drop-down menu below the table with a label Go to page.

Module Settings

The settings for the Ban Users module affect just the two columns added in the users table of the Network Admin Users Screen. The columns show the last IP address of the user and his ban status. To see the settings go to the Beyond Multisite page in the Network Admin Screen and click on Show Settings in the Ban Users box. To remove any of the columns, remove the tick of its checkbox and click Update Settings.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I ban any user?

  • You cannot ban a user if the plugin has not detected his IP address yet or if the IP address is the same as yours.

Why the IP address of some users is not detected?

  • For the plugin to detect the IP address, the user has to visit the site at least once while logged-in and while the plugin is active and the Ban Users module is enabled. It is also technically possible that some users are hiding their IP.

Can I ban only the user or only the IP?

  • No (but see the next question too). The ban affects both. If you want to deny access only to the user you can delete or spam the user with the built-in WordPress features.

Why there are two types of ban statuses on the ban and unban screens?

  • Even though the ban is for both the user and the IP, there is a situation in which a user is not banned and his IP is banned. This can happen when two users have the same IP address and one of them is banned. At this point the other user is not banned, but his current IP is.

What if I delete a banned user?

  • The ban will remain active and will continue to affect anyone using the banned IP address. You can also unban the deleted user if you want to remove the ban.

What if I disable the Ban Users module?

  • While it is disabled it would be as if no one is banned. But the list with the banned users is saved so when you enable the module they will be banned once more.
